Terms of use
Last updated 13 August 2026
These terms cover your use of the Build Me A Story app and this website, both operated by Engram Ltd. Using either means accepting these terms.
Who may use it
The app is designed for an adult to use together with a child. If you are under 18, you need a parent or guardian’s permission. The person who installs it is responsible for how it is used on that device.
The stories it builds
Stories and pictures are generated by an AI model from what you type. Three things follow from that, and they are worth knowing:
- The same idea will not give the same story twice. Generation is not repeatable, so a story you liked is worth keeping rather than expecting to recreate it.
- It can get things wrong. Anything factual in a generated story should be treated as invention, not information.
- We filter, but we cannot guarantee. The model is instructed to write for the age you chose, and its own safety filters apply on top. Neither is perfect. You are reading with your child, and we would ask you to keep an eye on what comes back and to tell us if something is wrong with it.
What you may do with them
The stories that you build are yours. Read them, keep them, share them with your family. We claim no ownership of the ideas you type or the stories that result.
Bear in mind that generated material sits awkwardly in copyright law in several countries, and that your use of the underlying model is also subject to Google’s terms for the Gemini API. If you intend to publish or sell something made here, take your own advice on it.
What you agree not to do
- Use the app to produce material that is illegal, or that sexualises, endangers or demeans a child.
- Try to work around the safety instructions that the app applies to what you type.
- Automate, scrape or bulk-generate through the app.
- Interfere with the app’s or the site’s operation, or with anyone else’s use of them.
We may stop providing the service to anyone doing these things.
Your stories are on your device
Finished stories are stored on your device rather than on our servers. That is a deliberate privacy decision - see the privacy policy - and it has a consequence you should plan around: if you delete the app, lose the device, or reset it, your stories go with it. Anything you want to keep permanently, keep a copy of elsewhere.
Paying for it
The app is currently free to use, with no ads or personal data collection. It’s a new app and we want to see how it’s used in the real world.
It costs us money to generate each story, so at some point we’ll need to start charging (still with no ads or personal data collection). When we do, it will be free to continue reading all the stories that you have already built.
Availability
Building a new story needs a working connection and the availability of the underlying generation model, neither of which we control. The service is provided as it is, without a guarantee that it will always be available or always succeed. Stories that you already have will open regardless.
Our liability
As far as the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for lost stories or data. Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited - and if you are a consumer, your statutory rights are unaffected by anything on this page.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The date at the top changes when we do, and continuing to use the app after that means accepting the new version.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer living elsewhere, this does not take away the protection of any mandatory law of the country you live in, and you may bring proceedings there.
